  • An abstract pattern taken from a piece of driftwood on San Juan Island. In black and white, the swirls from the wood grain are most apparent.
  • Weathered old yellow shingles on an outside wall of a house form an abstract pattern.
  • An old, weathered wall of plywood covered in peeling paint and remnants of old flyers that had been stapled on and then ripped off.
  • A pattern created from the exterior wall of a fireplace made of rounded rocks from an old river bed.
  • A stack of wood logs that have been split into firewood. Many of the logs show the growth rings as well as the tree bark.

  • The translucent underside of a giant leaf from a forest in Ireland was dimly lit from the sky above. The pattern from the veins is clearly apparent. The leaf was probably about five feet wide and about six feet tall.
  • A close-up abstract image of a kind of cactus found in the Arizona desert. The fronds all spread out from the center of the plant in an almost even pattern.
  • Closeup details from a saguaro cactus from the Sonora desert in Arizon. The sharp spines are nature's way of providing protection for the cactus from predators.
