National Park - Mt. Rainier

This gallery includes a series of photographs from two different winter expeditions to Mt. Rainier National Park. In both cases, I was on a snow camping adventure trip with a troop of boy scouts who were intending to dig snow caves as part of a survival training. We reached somewhere between 6,000 and 7,000 feet up on the mountain which is about 2,000 meters. Each time, I was fortunate enough to end up with good weather -- sun and scattered clouds with a bit of blustery wind during the night. The end result are a set of unusual photos of Mt. Rainier in winter in the sun -- and the photos at dawn of the boy scouts and their troop leaders show how nice it could be.

  • A small ice field is melting into a lake used for drinking water in Mt. Rainier National Park.
  • An organized pile of rocks is stacked up to form a small cairn or trail marker on a ledge high up on Mt. Rainier. In the background, the glaciers on the mountain fade into the distance.
  • A group of snowboarders, outlined against the sky, who were building a jump on a slope high up on Mt. Rainier -- out of bounds for most skiers.
  • Three climbers exploring the edge of an ice cornice on Mt. Rainier. This was a dangerous exploit as the lips of these cornices can be very unstable.
  • A group of climbers trekking along a ridge high up on the side of Mt. Rainier. The Cascade Mountain range is in the background.
  • A colorful tent located at 6,000 feet up on Mount Rainier. This is an unusual winter image of the mountain since it was taken in sunlight with light clouds drifting over the summit. This would be a typical starting off point for an expedition to climb up the mountain.
  • A group of tents high up on the side of Mt. Rainier is outlined against mountains of the Cascade range. This campsite was for an expedition of Boy Scouts.
  • A late winter scene from about 6,000 feet (1,800 meters) up on Mt. Rainier that shows some of the surrounding peaks from the Cascade mountain range. This image was shot on a peaceful dawn with clear sunny skies; a rare day in winter on the mountain.

  • A view of Mt. Rainier from a campground near the Paradise ranger station. The top of the mountain is shrouded in clouds.
  • A view of the Mt. Rainier summit on a day when the summit was alternately bathed in the sun and covered in clouds.
  • A small grove of three fir trees in deep snow on Mt. Rainier. In an unusual winter situation in the Pacific Northwest, the sky was clear and blue!
  • Three snowy trees in the middle of a snow field at high altitude on Mt. Rainier. These trees are lightly flocked (ie, covered) with snow which would be typical of the winter season.
  • A group of mountain climbers ascending Mt. Rainier into the midst of a storm. The summit peak dead ahead is covered in clouds.
  • A widescreen panorama view of snow-covered Mount Rainier in the winter.
  • A group of tents on a winter camping expedition on Mt. Rainier. These tents were partially covered by snow from the evening before. In the background, a small animal has left a set of tracks in the fresh snow.
  • A campground site in the snow with a tent partially covered by snow from the night before. This tent is tucked into the trees to provide some partial shelter from the snow.
  • A small grove of trees isolated on a snowy ridge high up on Mt. Rainier. These fir trees are lightly flocked with snow and are highlighted against the colored sky of sunrise.
  • After a snowstorm adventure over the previous night, an early morning sunrise greeted our group on Mt. Rainier. The tent was one of our shelters.
