Doors, Windows and Walls

Interesting architectural features including doors, windows and walls. The textures and details and abstract elements are sometimes more interesting than the full building.

  • A building under construction in Hong Kong is framed with bambo scaffolding. Two men are visible in the center of the image, dwarfed by the size of the project.
  • A simple architectural abstract based on the interplay between a white stucco wall with a few cracks, a deep blue sky, and a bright red umbrella.
  • A broken window, with cracks radiating from the shattered hole in the center, in a high school in a South Africa township near Cape Town symbolizes a future life with little or no hope.
  • The outline of a man, at sunset, exiting through the iron bars into the prison yard of a jail in South Africa.
  • A bleak and dismal view through a prison window. The bars over the window with the only view of coils of barbed wire on a wall is symbolic of the lack of freedom for prisoners.
  • An upside-down horseshoe that is nailed to a prison cell door in the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, South Africa. This symbol is often taken to mean that someone's luck has run out such as in this case when prisoners were taken to the torture chamber in the castle.
  • A very colorful birdhouse with colors in vivid paint colors for each section. This is a single structure with mutliple holes to give this structure the ability to support a flock of birds.
  • A caricature of a lawyer, holding several books, who is walking. In the background, the quadrangle of the law school is visible through the old, stained glass window. Note that a bit of extra border was left around the edge to provide context for the image and can be trimmed off.
  • A stained glass image of a lawyer, or perhaps an English barrister, deep in thought who is writing an entry into a journal. In the background, the quadrangle of the law school is visible through the old, stained glass window. The image is framed naturally by the leaded edge of the window.
  • With four seagulls on an old mossy iron roof at Alcatraz, one is facing in the wrong direction.
  • An old, rusted iron dorr leadning from the recreation yard through a thick concrete wall at Alcatraz prison to freedom on the other side.
  • A bald eagle emblem centered below a window at a prison administration building. The word "FREE" on the flag is an ironic symbol for a penitentiary.
  • A rusty door at the old Alcatraz maximum security prison in San Francisco. This door, once painted green, has rusted out over the years due to a lack of maintenance and is now a symbol of neglect.
  • The entrance door to the cells in Block A at the Theresienstadt concentration camp in what is now the Czech Republic. The dark black opening, framed by red bricks, is an ominous sign of what took place behind the door.
  • A detail view of a window illuminated by outside sunlight from an old castle in Montalcino, Italy. The flowers add a nice touch of color in the foreground.
  • A detaled abstract view of the metal panels forming the wall of a modern building. (Scanned from black and white film.)
  • A view of the Space Needle in Seattle looking straight up at the observation deck from the base of the structure. (Scanned from black and white film.)
  • A detail from a modern architectural landmark in Seattle with shiny metal panels against a plain sky. (Scanned from black and white film.)
