  • A small green and yellow beach crab looking upwards with pincers at the ready to protect itself from predators.
  • A baby killer whale (orcinus orca) is surfacing with a female close behind. there is also a third whale surfacing just behind the baby.
  • A wild northern river otter (lontra canadensis) in the San Juan Islands of Washington State is lying on the ground.
  • A snapping turle amid a pile of muck at the lakeshore.
  • A herd of wild horses in a grass meadow in Central Oregon. These horses are on Forest Service land.
  • A common honey bee (apis mellifera) molesting a thistle.
  • A killer whale exhaling a large breath of spray as it surfaces. This orca is in Puget Sound in the San Juan Islands.
  • A honey bee is launching into flight after taking the nectar from a thistle flower.
  • A wild brown-throated three-toed sloth (bradypus variegatus) is climbing along a branch high up in the jungle canopy of Costa Rica. With the large stripe on its back, this is an adult male.
  • A group of California sea lions pulled up on a rocky beach near San Diego.
  • A single killer whale has just surfaced and, in one large exhaie, has created large spray from the water near its blowhole. This whale, from the shape of its fin, is a female.
  • A lizard from the Arizona desert is camouflaged with colors on its scales that blend in against the desert background.
  • A Sonoran whipsnake taking refuge on a tree branch as we passed by. This non-poisonous snake lives in the desert where it lives on small rodents or other creatures.
  • This spring, a small swarm of honey bees started to build a nest in a tree near our house. Before we had it removed by a beekeeper, several hundred of them clumped together in this ball as they busily started work on finishing their search and migration to a more permanent home.
  • A small pod of four orca whales are surfacing in the waters of Puget Sound near San Juan Island.

  • A buffalo in Yellowstone National Park shaking the dust off its back immediately after it rolled around in its wallow. The cloud of dust helps outline the horns of the huge beast.
  • Two orca whales in Puget Sound that have just surfaced to catch a breath of fresh air before diving under the water again.
  • Two dragonflies are resting together on some twigs near a pond. Dragonflies are very colorful and these two large insects with bright blue tails and green bodies are no exception.
